The Argument
The county is writing its next twenty-year plan, and it wants your voice in the room. Drive Jackson — the countywide vision initiative led by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce with Planning NEXT as facilitator — is holding a second round of Vision Plan Pop-up events on October 28 and 29 at four locations around the county. After more than 1,000 residents helped build the plan’s framework over the summer, these open-house gatherings are the next chance to weigh in before the plan is finalized. No RSVP is needed, and each event is designed to fit a different part of your day.
Four Events, Same Format
FACT (Legal News, reporting the Drive Jackson pop-ups): The four events are: Tuesday, Oct. 28, 5:30–7:30 p.m., Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 1107 Adrian St., Jackson (free casual dinner); Wednesday, Oct. 29, 9:00–10:30 a.m., Callaghan’s Coffee Café, 109 S Main St., Brooklyn (coffee discount); Wednesday, Oct. 29, 12:00–2:00 p.m., Jackson City Hall, 161 W Michigan Ave., Jackson (light lunch provided); and Wednesday, Oct. 29, 4:00–6:00 p.m., Lost Railway Museum, 142 W Michigan Ave., Grass Lake (free sweet treat, family activities, after-hours museum access).

What Drive Jackson Is
FACT (Legal News): Drive Jackson is a countywide initiative to develop a bold, community-driven 20-year Strategic Vision Plan, initiated by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce together with partners including Accelerate Jackson County, Experience Jackson, Jackson Community Foundation, the City of Jackson, and Jackson County.
FACT (Legal News): Over the summer, the Drive Jackson survey and in-person efforts interacted with over 1,000 residents of various demographics and locations within Jackson County to formulate the plan’s framework.
COMMENTARY: A thousand voices in round one is a real signal — this is not a plan written in a conference room and then announced. The second round exists precisely because a vision that reflects “the voices, values and aspirations of people from across the county” only works if people keep showing up. An open-house format with dinner, coffee, or a family activity attached lowers the cost of attending to nearly zero, which is exactly how you hear from residents who never go to public hearings.
Why the Second Round Matters
FACT (Legal News): All Vision Pop-ups follow the same format, so residents are encouraged to attend the event that best fits their schedule; no RSVP is required, and details are at drivejacksoncounty.com.
COMMENTARY: The practical move is simple: pick the session that fits — a morning coffee in Brooklyn, a lunch hour at City Hall, an evening in Grass Lake with the kids — and add one concrete idea about the county’s future. Housing, roads, recreation, jobs, downtowns: the plan’s framework came from residents, and this round decides what survives into the final version. Plans written with the public tend to hold up better politically and practically than plans written for the public.
