You have passed them on the highway and probably never thought twice about it.
A pickup with amber lights flashing and an OVERSIZE LOAD sign on the roof, running ahead of a truck carrying something impossibly wide.
That vehicle is a pilot car, and the driver in it is doing a job almost nobody sees.
In Albion, that job belongs to A and A Davis Pilot Car.
What They Do
A and A Davis Pilot Car is a pilot car and escort vehicle service based in Albion, Michigan.
They guide oversize loads: the trucks hauling freight too wide, too tall, or too long to travel the road on their own.
Their services are route surveys, height pole runs, and lead and chase escort.
The company is family run, by Amber and Amos, and it is fully insured.
Most drivers never learn the names of the escort companies working the highway in front of them.
Haulers do, and they call the ones they trust.
From Alabama to Albion
The Davis story does not start in Michigan.
The business began in Alabama, and its corporate phone number, 205-310-3019, still carries an Alabama area code because of it.
As oversize work between the two regions kept growing, Amber and Amos followed it north and put down a Michigan base in Albion.
Four years in, the operation is ready for business out of both states: Alabama, where it started, and Michigan, where it is growing.
That two-state reach matters in this trade, because a load does not stop being oversize at a state line.
Neither do the people escorting it.
How the Work Actually Runs
An escort job starts before the truck ever rolls.

First comes the route survey: the permitted route gets driven in advance, checking bridge clearances, tight turns, low wires, construction, and anything else waiting down the road.
On moving day, the lead car runs out front on the permit route, watching for obstacles and calling them back to the truck driver by radio.
The chase car runs behind, guarding the rear of the load and protecting its lane when the truck needs to change lanes or make a turn.
For tall loads, the lead vehicle carries a height pole, a measuring mast set to the exact height of the load.
That way, the first thing that ever touches a low bridge or a sagging wire is a pole, not the freight.
It is choreography at highway speed, done quietly, in all kinds of weather, with the whole road watching and almost nobody understanding what they are seeing.
The Argument
A directory usually lists what a business sells, but pilot car work shows why that is not the whole story.
What A and A Davis really sells is margin: the surveyed route, the measured bridge, the extra set of eyes that keeps a load and everyone sharing the road with it out of trouble.
Michigan law requires an escort for loads over twelve feet wide, two escorts over fourteen feet, and a height pole escort for loads over fourteen feet five inches tall.

Behind every one of those rules sits a load that has to move and a public that has to be protected while it moves.
Companies like A and A Davis are how both of those things happen at the same time.
That is worth listing, and it is worth knowing by name.
Life in the Driver’s Seat
Pilot car driving may be one of the more private careers in America.
There is no national rulebook for it. Every state sets its own size thresholds, its own equipment rules, and its own travel hours, and Michigan’s oversize window runs from sunrise to sunset.
A driver who crosses three states in a week can work under three different sets of rules before Friday.
The work itself moves through private channels, too: carrier relationships built load by load over years, and load boards where tomorrow’s run gets posted today.
It is a trade that develops day by day, in public rule changes on one side and private networks on the other, and falling behind on either side costs you work.
Amber and Amos have built A and A Davis on staying current with both.
That means watching what the states publish, and watching just as closely what the carrier networks and load boards are saying.
It is independent work by design. Like most of the trade, A and A Davis runs on independent contractor roots, and the family is building toward a fuller corporate setup step by step, keeping the operation hands-on as it grows.
The challenges are real: long days measured against a setting sun, routes that change with the weather and the construction season, and a load behind you that cannot stop quickly or turn tightly.
The drivers who last in this work are the ones who treat every mile like it matters, because it does.
